Video Shows Difference Between Healthy Lungs And Smoker’s Lungs

Amanda Eller, BSN, RN, a Cardiovascular Progressive Care Nurse from North Carolina, has shocked cigarette smokers around the world with her matter-of-fact video comparing healthy lungs with smoker’s lungs sitting side-by-side on a surgical sheet pan.

Ms. Eller might have done more than any recent government-sponsored anti-smoking campaign to convince people to quit as she pumped air into each set of lungs in a gasp-worthy demonstration of the devastating effects that smoking one pack of cigarettes per day can have after 20 years. Her video has been viewed over 50 million times on Facebook.

In the video, Eller inflates a set of sickly-looking black lungs and explains they are from someone with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), typical of cancerous lungs. “The elastance is gone, so they’ll stretch out, but then the recoil of them just snaps right back because there’s nothing to help keep them open.”

Eller then inflates a set of healthy, pink lungs and demonstrates that there is both inspiration (inhaling) and expiration as the healthy lungs slowly deflate in contrast to the way the COPD lungs fall flat immediately after inflation.

Cigarette smoking is the leading cause of preventable disease and death in the United States. The CDC reports that smoking is responsible for 1 in 5 deaths, more than 480,000 people.

This amazing video is a wonderful demonstration of the power of nurses. They are at the leading edge of patient care and are usually the ones with the best insights when it comes to a no-nonsense view of health and disease (note if using a desktop to view Amanda’s Facebook videos, you will need to turn the volume up manual via the button at the bottom right of the post box).
